Social Security Disability Insurance is a federal insurance program you pay into through Social Security (FICA) taxes. If you have enough work credits and a qualifying disability, you may receive monthly cash benefits based on your earnings record. In January 2026 the average disabled-worker benefit was about $1,633 per month.
